An Emotional Occasion when Rosenior Transcends Obstacles

"Liam Rosenior is a top tactician that knows the game intimately, which is the most important thing.

"However, as Chelsea's first African heritage footballer, it would be dishonest to claim this news does not affect me."

These were the sentiments expressed by Paul Canoville, the man who made his groundbreaking debut for Chelsea's senior side off the bench back in April 1982.

This week, the club hired RC Strasbourg manager Rosenior, aged 41, as their new manager following the exit of manager Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are within a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo which also owns the London club.

Statistics show only twelve black head coaches – excluding individuals in interim roles – in England's top flight since it began thirty-four years ago.

"What really strikes me regarding Rosenior is he was raised and developed his game not far from here, he understands this area," added Canoville.

"When children see a figure like Rosenior in charge of the team they support, a person who looks like them, from a similar background, who comes from a family that fights for what's right… that's impactful demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"Indeed, this represents a massive step for the club, for the capital, for all young person dreaming big.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, give him the necessary tools, and let the man get on with the job."

What Does the Statistics Indicate?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' manager in 1996 thereby becoming the top flight's first African heritage head coach.

A dozen years on, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first black English manager in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo is the sole additional present Premier League gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The shortage of managers of colour throughout the English game corresponds with a lack of diversity in the boardroom.

According to a Black Footballers Partnership 2023 report, forty-three percent of top-flight footballers come from black heritage.

However, research by Kick It Out found just 3.2 percent of executive and leadership positions across 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

At senior coaching positions, according to data from 11 clubs, the figure is two percent.

Across all coaching roles – encompassing senior roles – from the same eleven clubs, the figure is five percent.

"He has undoubtedly made history in terms of him being announced as the Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we want to witness more such appointments," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists a wealth of ability that exists in the black and underrepresented groups... aspiring coaches desire a chance to demonstrate what they can do. It is imperative to persist in striving to dismantle those barriers down."

Furthermore, the new appointee is set to become the fourth permanent English managers currently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that lags behind the continent's remaining major divisions regarding national managers.

Sixteen out of twenty first division coaches in Serie A are from Italy, 11 of the 20 are Spanish, Twelve in the Bundesliga are German and 10 of the 18 are French.

Current Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt all young English managers with a youth development pedigree are, in some way no matter who you support, rooting for Liam.

"It's truly motivating for young English coaches in the system to see an individual land such a role with his background and everyone hopes he does really well."

'Let's not forget – he's there based on talent'

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as Fulham, the Hammers and Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint culminating in a brief spell at the third-tier club Brentford FC in 2006.

Two years ago, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered to tackling inequality in football and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he pursued his father's footsteps. He began writing a column for The Guardian, and in one piece he acknowledged the lack of diversity of black coaches. He pointed out that race does not determine ability and said opportunities must be awarded on merit.

He also made the view he would repeat: that vast under-representation results in a failure to understand of players with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

In a podcast for a football podcast, he explained how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" or "emotional", noting that he understood the Dutch player of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to join him with a move from France to Chelsea in July.

In subsequent newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" to hear a coach make a homophobic slur. He pledged support for the Rainbow Laces campaign and authored a public message to the former US President while he was in office, condemning his "overt" racism.

He has subsequently made his name in the dugout – first at Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their time together at Derby County.

The manager bid goodbye to his former club earlier this week before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract with the Blues.

The Blues boasted the Premier League's first African heritage boss in Gullit and the first black captain in Paul Elliott.
