Blues Manager Maresca Dismisses Manchester City Links as '100%' Rumour
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded fresh talk linking him with a move to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The 45-year-old, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man at the Etihad, responded to the persistent speculation surrounding his future.
Maresca, named Chelsea manager in June 2024, is under contract that runs through the end of the decade, with a possible extra year available.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is little room for such distractions."
He went on to explain, "First of all, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my attention, I have stated many times, is just about this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was connected to a role in Italy with Juventus. So I ignore it because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, presently placed fourth in the top flight, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT kick-off.
Tensions After Previous Comments
Maresca's most recent comments follow after he referred to a recent 48-hour period as his most difficult since joining Chelsea.
Those original remarks had fueled widespread speculation of a possible disagreement between the manager and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When pressed if he had discussed matters with the club's leadership, Maresca responded, "We are in the same facility, so we speak about different things. But about the Everton press conference, no."
The manager did confirm he would definitely remain at the club for the coming campaign and urged the fans to "continue to support the team".
In more positive news, Maresca indicated that injured attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back sooner than expected, potentially in contention for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: An 'Open Wound'
The apparent disconnect between Maresca and the Chelsea board remains as an open wound that still create unease.
While there has been no further escalation of the matter in the open, there has equally been no apology offered, leaving the disagreement unresolved.
The atmosphere during these media briefings has become increasingly strained, leading to concerns it could undermine what has otherwise been a promising start to the campaign.
Chelsea's sporting situation is positive: they are in the top four in the Premier League, have reached the Carabao Cup last four, and can secure a better Champions League draw with good performances in their remaining games.
The prevailing uncertainty is whether this behind-the-scenes situation might eventually affect a squad that was just starting to appear settled.
