Catherine's Traditional Yuletide Carol Concert Spotlights Unsung Heroes
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary festive musical service at the iconic London venue, with attendees featuring dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.
The sizable congregation will enjoy a blend of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from stars like Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Focusing on Love and Generosity
The central message of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.
Among the guests will be Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose child passed away from a brain tumour, and who set up a charity, a support fund, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.
"The time, care and compassion you give, often discreetly and without words, and without any expectation or recognition, make an profound impact to the well-being of people," Her Royal Highness stated in a note prior to the concert.
A Gradual Return
The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to public life following her health challenges and treatment, last month delivering her initial major address in two years, in which she talked about recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".
Musical Talent and Access
Attendees entering the Abbey can listen to young musicians backed by the Future Talent charity, established in part by the Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for musical tuition.
Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Wales, has been helped by the trust, with funding assisting with equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "amazing" to be performing at tonight's service.
"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now enrolled at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to develop their musical skills.
A Sisterly Duo
Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who plays the euphonium, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.
Among the guests will be representatives of different generations.
That will include young Saphia Turner, nine, honouree of a prize for youthful altruism, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to collect donations for local food charities.
Festive Decor and Performances
The Abbey has been festooned with specially made wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.
Taking to the stage will be singer Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "a dream come true."
The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be aired by a major network on Christmas Eve.
